The
little city is divided by the small creek Solofrana
and is in the natural water field of the Irno's
Valley. The city count approximately 12.000 inhabitants
spread-out in a rich, mountainous territory at
about 65km from Napoli, 32 km from Salerno and
17km from Avellino, along the highway Salerno-Avellino.
The Solofra's area have been inhabited since the
prehistoric Age, and many italics tombs of the
V-IV century are found in the territory. There
are also "villae rusticae" and aqueduct
of the Roman age and many "casali" of
the Mddle-Age. The city has been "feudo"
of the families of Filangieri, Tricarico, Zurlo
and Orsini, in the limits of the ancient city
of ROTA, today Mercato S. Severino.
The ancient art of the tannery is the main job
since the XI cent. and today the city is know
around the world for the skins.
